Things To Do - Horse Racing

I have never been to a horse race before, and I can’t tell you why. Remington Park in OKC runs a Thoroughbred racing season from August to December, and we went yesterday.

Free to enter, bets as low as two dollars. You can bet on every race and only spend twenty bucks. Putting just a few dollars down makes each race exciting, even if you know nothing about what’s happening.

My quick crash course:

You can bet on a horse to win, which is obviously to come in first. To place, which means come in second or first. Or show, which is finish in the top three. When betting, refer tot he horses by number, “3 dollars on number 6 to place.” Before each race they show the horses and jockeys, so you can check them out and decide who you like.

Betting on the coolest names, the prettiest horses, or the most pompous looking jockeys are all equally valid decision-making criteria.

Betting odds are estimated before the match, so you get an idea who the favorite and long-shots are. But the actual odds are based off of actual bets placed, and may change if more people bet one way or the other.

Awesome way to spend an evening on the cheap, and a sweet date location.
